1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider
Beautiful Original Paint, One Owner 1963-2009, 28,000 Original Miles, Multiple Concours Award Winner, Nearly All Original, Documentation from New, Extraordinarily Well Preserved Original Car
This 1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider is a rare opportunity to own what must be one of the most original and well documented early Alfa Spiders in existence. In short, this is an almost entirely original, essentially one owner, 28,000 mile, preservation class winning car with original paint. It was bought new at Coventry Motors in Long Island by a meticulous accountant (with a penchant for record keeping) in March of 1963. He ordered the car with a heater, a Blaupunkt radio, seatbelts and a mirror. The car also has a rare period aftermarket Conti exhaust. He drove it sparingly and in good weather until 1972 when he parked it in his barn. It was not touched again until 2009, when it was discovered by a local enthusiast, who found out about it through his son in law, who met the original owner's wife when she came into the new car dealership where he works. From 2009 to 2010 it was brought back to life and it remains extraordinarily original.
The great thing about the car is that both its owners were incredibly meticulous and careful in their approach. They cared deeply for the condition of the car. That is why it has been so well preserved and does not need restoration. We have the original registration for the 1956 Plymouth that the original owner traded in to buy the car, as well as the original bill of sale, 36 original maintenance records, letters back and forth to the NYC department of finance about the taxes owed on the car, among countless other documents that detail the car's history.
650 painstaking (and documented) hours were spent bringing the car back to excellent running and driving condition. The primary intent was to keep the car as original as possible and to that end he went to great lengths. A full itemized list of what was done is available upon request.
The car has nearly all original paint, which presents beautifully with light patina. Some original paint can be horribly faded or crazed. This is not. At a recent Alfa Romeo show a passerby mistook the car for a recent restoration. This is not to say it does not have some patinated areas, but the overall condition is remarkable. Given that the paint is half a century old, it is truly a wonder how it survived.
The car has 28,000 original miles. The interior is original and presents as nearly new. The top is original, has a lot of character and few patches. The drive train is original as are most of its accessories (fuel pump, distributor, carburetor, etc which have all been gone through.) The car even comes with its 5 original tires. They hold air and are in striking condition for their age.
It has been taken to numerous shows where it has won many awards. The two most important were a 99.2 out of 100 points at the Alfa Romeo Owners Club National Convention in 2010 where it received the coveted and highest level Certificato D'oro. It also won a first place at the Saratoga Fall Ferrari Festival, a second place medal at Lime Rock in 2009, an award for originality at the Rhinebeck AACA in 2010, a Significant Alfa Award at the Alfa Owner's Club Concorso in Connecticut, and a class win at the Locust Grove AACA.
The original owner kept every scrap of paper that was ever associated with the car and those documents remain with the car to this day.
These documents are as follows:
