1966 Ford GT40 Mk. 1 Recreation by Cape Advanced Vehicles
Head of CAV America's Personal Car, Completely Hand Assembled By Factory, Fully Optioned, 630 Photos of Build, Gulf Livery Shoes Included!
This CAV GT40 Recreation was built in 2009 on special order for the head of CAV America. He spent a month and a half to travel to South Africa to personally supervise and contribute to the build of this car. He then used it as his personal car and maintained it to the highest levels. The car was completely assembled at the factory, by the factory, something very rarely seen on CAVs. Most CAVs arrive in the US partially assembled and are put together by other shops. While at the factory over 630 photos of the car's build were taken to painstakingly document the process. These remain on a CD that comes with the car. For those unfamiliar with CAV, they are known to be one of the best, if not the best GT40 replica. THIS IS NOT A KIT CAR. It is a handbuilt stainless steel monocoque constructed and designed at a cutting edge facility in South Africa.
Being a 2009, this car has over 1000 improvements over the earlier (pre 100) cars, according to the factory. This includes improved suspension, adjustable seat and pedal box for increased comfort and the ability to seat drivers up to 6'4, improved air conditioning, 930 CV joints, thicker halfshafts, improved suspension uprights and Wilwood brakes.
The car is stunning in its Gulf livery and makes an even better impression in person than it does in photos. It is a spot-on homage to the Gulf GT40s that dominated Lemans. Chassis 1075 won Lemans in both 1968 and 1969, beating the much faster Porsches, and was the only chassis to ever win Lemans twice.
According to the factory, CAV is the only company to be officially licensed to sell a Gulf motorsport car. Neither Porsche nor the other GT40 replica manufacturers such as Superformance are licensed to do Gulf cars. So this is the only officially sanctioned Gulf GT40 replica. The car is registered with the Gulf company registry and is officially endorsed by them.
The 302 motor setup in the car is done to the highest level, having been built up professionally by a gentleman that builds motors for South African V8 racecars. It is running on Webers- another expensive and rare option not often seen on these cars. It was fully balanced and blueprinted. The Webers were recently re-tuned and the car runs and drives extremely well. The car also runs the favored Audi O1E gearbox, a large improvement over the previous gearboxes used (Audi 015.)
The car was fully optioned, including the hard to find Gulf Livery and expensive fully adjustable suspension.
Overall this is a rare opportunity to find a Gulf GT40 recreation by one of the finest companies in the industry. This car delivers excitement and performance that exceeds far more expensive cars in the multi hundred or multimillion dollar range. It is stunning to look at, rare, and exhilarating to drive. To get in and drive this car is a very special experience and the Gulf livery adds even more of a sense of occasion.
It has excellent provenance and is a very unique example, having been owned by the head of CAV North America. It has been meticulously documented and maintained and must be considered one of the best CAVs offered for sale.
